On Thursday early morning, two passenger train collided near Karachi’s Landhi railway station killing 15 people and injuring 40 others.
The incident took place at 7.18 am in Gaddafi Town Landhi when the train Zakaria Express collided with Fareed Express. Local media said that it was due to the wrong signal that had been given to the driver of Zakaria Express. Three boogies of the train were completely destroyed. Fareed Express was at Juma Goth Train station when Zakaria Express crashed into it, according to SP Malir.
Rescuers arrived the site and the injured were taken to nearby hospital. Many of the injures have head injuries and many are in critical condition. The injured were transferred to Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. An emergency has been declared. Several people are still trapped under the wreckage.
The crash resulted traffic jam and the ambulance which were carrying the injured got stuck in the traffic.
Fareed Express was coming from Lahore to Karachi , while Zakaria Express set off its journey from Multan. Railway official Nasir Nazeer said that the real cause of the collision is yet to be found.
All trains from Karachi have been suspended till rescue work is completed. Trains on their way to Karachi will be stopped at another station before they reach Landhi.
Khawaja Saad Rafique, railway minister has announced Rs 1,000,000 and Rs 500,000 as compensation for the dead and the injured respectively.
In September, Karachi bound passenger train Awam Express collided with a stationary freight train near Multan in Punjab province, killing 6 people and injuring over 150.
