With an aim to increase security of women in Kolkata, 4 new all-women police stations are set to come up. On Monday the state cabinet approved the decision at the meeting held in Nabanna.
These police stations will come up in Ultadanga, Behala, Taltala, and Karaya. With these new women police stations, that will turn up in various divisions of the Kolkata Police including Eastern Suburban, South West, Central and South East division, the total number of women police stations in the city would rise to 8. Right now, Kolkata has 4 all-women police stations at Watgunge, Tollygunge, Amherst Street and Patuli.
Sources from the Nabanna said, “There will be 41 new posts created for these police stations.”
Dinhata police station in Coochbehar district would be divided in two and one new, Sahebganj police station, will set up. It has been a longstanding demand of the residents of the area. The jurisdiction of Dinhata police station is considered too big.
Sources said there are two reasons behind increasing women police stations. Firstly, though the crime rate against women in the city is fewer compared to that of other cities, setting up of new women police stations would further reduce crime against women. At the same time, the number of women police would also go up in these areas.
A senior state minister presented at the meeting said, “These police stations like the four others will exclusively investigate crimes against women and focus particularly on dowry and domestic violence cases, abduction and sexual offenses.”
The chief minister has a target of setting up 65 women police station across West Bengal. In the first phase, women police stations were set up at different places including Asansol, Contai, Jalpaiguri Sadar, Darjeeling Sadar, Barasat, Howrah, Baruipur, Jhargram, Chinsurah, Siliguri and Krishnanagar. Later, 10 more women police stations came up at Balurghat, Kharagpur, Uluberia, Cooch Behar, Raiganj, Berhampore, Haldia, and Arambag. Bidhannagar and Durgapur Commissionerates also got one women police station each.
There are 3 personnel in each city police stations; a sub-inspector and two constables. Women police have also been deployed at the radio flying squad constablesthat is stationed at night to respond to any crimes against women.
