The Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B) ordered to cancel the permission of 73 TV channels, 24 FM channels and 9 newspapers and periodicals for violation of the regulations in recent years.
Minister of state for I&B Rajyavardhan Rathore said in Rajya Sabha, “For violating the provisions of uplinking guidelines, the permission of 73 TV channels has been cancelled till date.”
The TV channels include Mohua Punjabi, Mohua Telegu, Just TV, Khaas, Key TV, Vision Entertainment among others whose licenses have been cancelled as the channels were not operationalized within the fixed period of a year. The Home Ministry refused security clearance of other TV channels like STV Haryana, Focus Haryana, Focus NE, Lemon TV. Presently, 892 private satellite TV channels are registered in the country.
The 24 FM channels of six private broadcasters violated the provisions of the Grant of Permission Agreement (GOPA) which they signed with the government. The ministry has given permission to 196 community radio channels and 42 private channels.
Through the Registrar of Newspaper the ministry has cancelled the registration of nine newspapers and periodicals.
Rajyavardhan Rathore said that there is a need to update and revise the legal regulations in print sector. “owing to phenomenal growth after liberalization of government policies, I&B ministry has initiated the Press and Registration of Books and Publications (PRBP) Bill with a view to replace the existing PRB Act, 1867”. He further said that the ministry is working towards tightening the norms for print media.
