A disturbing CCTV footage showed a woman while fighting with her in-laws throwing her two-year-old son off a staircase from the second floor of her house.
26-year-old Sonu Gupta’s husband Nitin Gupta, a businessman filed a complaint against her. The police registered a case under Section 308 of the IPC (attempt to commit culpable homicide).
According to the police, the child, Anshu is suffering head and face injuries and is being treated at the AIIMS hospital.
The mother’s wild behaviour was captured on two CCTV cameras which the Gupta’s installed at their home in southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur area.
The videos showed Sonu sitting on her bed while fighting with her in-laws and the child was sleeping beside her. Sometimes later, she was getting hysterical, throwing the things around. She suddenly picked up her child, went to the staircase and threw her child off. Her in-laws then went down to save the child.
The recording showed the crime was committed on January 11 around 4 pm but the complaint was filed on January 24, 12 days later of the incident.
DCP southeast Romil Baniya said, “On January 24, we received a call from Nitin Gupta saying that his wife threw his son off the staircase. We recorded his statement and took the child for a medical examination at AIIMS trauma centre. A case was immediately registered against Sonu Gupta and the investigation is on.”
No arrest has been made yet against Sonu Gupta. The sources said she was called for questioning but refused to tell anything about the incident.
A police officer said, “Though it appears that she did it in a fit of rage, the motive is still unclear.”
Her in-laws claimed that Sonu is short-tempered. They alleged she often picked up a fight on minor issues and went out of control.
Sonu and Nitin have married five years ago. Sonu’s mother-in-law alleged on that day when they were talking, Sonu started fighting over property. “While she was shouting, she pulled the child and said that I will kill him and frame all of you. She threw the child from the second floor to the first floor.”
Sonu’s mother-in-law said she installed the CCTV to get the proof of her crimes.
A senior police official stated, “These claims have, however, not yet been verified. It is also possible that the in-laws are trying to frame her. We are looking into the matter and appropriate action will be taken soon. The woman is being counselled.”
