At least 3 people were injured as 10 coaches of the Jhelum Express passenger train derailed in Punjab’s Ludhiana. As a result the Indian Railways has cancelled almost 81 trains.
The bogies derailed 50 metres sort of a bridge over the Sutlej at Ladhuwal on Tuesday. The accident occurred at around 3:10 am. Ministry of the Railways tweeted that the injured people have been sent to Civil hospital Ludhiana. The three injured including one woman and a child and one was seriously injured.
The ministry said that the derailed coaches were S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8, B5 and PC. The train was on its way to Pune when the bogies derailed.
The train had 24 coaches and the derailment happened between Phillaur and Ludhiana. According to a railway spokesman, after the incident the Ludhiana-Jalandhar tracks were blocked so the traffic between the two section got affected.
The spokesman also said, “Some trains have been cancelled and diverted. The Northern Railways will provide a list of the affected trains. The accident took place in the area of Ferozepur division of Northern Railways.”
The other passengers were taken to Ludhiana where they boarded other trains for their destinations.
Anuj Prakash, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and Additional DRM Ashutosh Pant hurried to the spot. The authorities started to repair the damaged tracks and remove the derailed coaches.
The cause of the derailment is possibly the negligence and the lack of maintenance of the track.
A major accident could have happen but as the train just took out of Phillar station after a halt, at that moment the speed was slow. The railway sources said that to identify the cause of the derailment a high level inquiry have been ordered. Also the technical experts reached at the place.
