Nabha Jailbreak: Khalistan Terrorist Chief Harminder Singh Mintoo Arrested Within 24 Hours After His Jailbreak

Harminder Singh Mintoo

Khalistan Liberation Front Chief Harminder Singh Mintoo along with five others escaped from Nabha jail in Punjab on Sunday was arrested today in Delhi.

In a joint operation by the Punjab and Delhi police, Mintoo was arrested at a New Delhi railway station.

On Sunday morning, 12-14 men, in police uniform entered the Nabha Central Jail and attacked the security guards and escaped with Mintoo and five other prisoners.

The terrorists came in four cars. They kept three cars outside and used an SUV to reach the jail gate. Some of them wear turbans and some of them were clean shaved. They pretended like they brought a criminal who actually was one of them.

According to witnesses, the attackers who helped the prisoners to escape had hidden their weapons in blankets and they had also extra police uniforms.

They fired more than 100 round and within 10 minutes they escaped.

On Sunday evening, UP police arrested the key character of the whole jailbreak drama, Parminder Singh aka Parinda who was planning and executing the jailbreak.

Parminder Singh told the officers that Mintoo and another prisoner Kashmir Singh were not in their plan. They wanted to escape with Vicky Gounder who was accused in many cases of murder and highway robbery. Somehow, Mintoo came to know about the plan and he used it.

Indian Express quoted UP ADGP (Law and order) Daljit Singh Chaudhary as saying, “Palwinder told us that the plan was only to get the gangsters freed. But Gurpreet Sekhon had told Mintoo that they would escape on Sunday. Mintoo was keeping a watch and joined them in the jail corridor.”

The Punjab government sacked the superintendent and the deputy superintendent. The government suspended the ADGP (jails) and ordered to form a SIT to investigate the jailbreak. It also ordered a separate inquiry committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Jagpal Singh Sandhu to probe the matter.

Within 24 hours of escape, police caught Mintoo. He was traced when he tried to contact a relative in Delhi and his call was intercepted. Police said he may have planned to escape to Nepal.

Then they alerted all the border posts at the Delhi-Haryana border.

The chief of banned Khalistan Liberation Force, Mintoo is accused in more than 10 terror cases including the attack on Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Police arrested him in 2014 when he came from Thailand at the Delhi airport.

According to the Punjab police, he was trying to renew the Khalistan separatist movement. He was also in touch with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence officers.

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal called a meeting of senior officials including State Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal.

Chaudhary said during the investigation, a self-loading rifle (SLR), several rounds of ammunition and three rifles were recovered from the SUV.

Police and security agencies alerted six states, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Nepal routes were also being checked.

But the matter is very serious. There’s raising a question that when the jail authorities will learn a lesson! At the end of the October, SIMI operatives escaped from the high-security Bhopal jail and here some terrorists got access into the prison and also successful in escaping the prisoners from a high-security jail.

The authorities should be very cautious about their security. Otherwise, these jailbreak dramas will happen more and more in the future.
