When India was celebrating the wins of Sakshi Malik and P. V. Sindhu at the Rio Olympics a sad news of Narsingh Yadav’s ban somehow has changed the scenario. His Olympic dream was shattered after the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) awarded him 4 year ban for doping violations.
About midnight India time the ad hoc of CAS had appreciated India’s presentation that the wrestler would play on Friday morning. Late in the evening, around 8:30 pm (India) a call from CAS destroyed all the hopes. The CAS body set aside the decision of the Indian anti-doping body, NADA and decided a four year ban on Yadav. He was about to compete in the 74 kg category on Friday morning.
After this ban he forced to leave his room in the Games Village. An official release of CAS said that the panel did not accept the argument that Yadav was a victim of sabotage. The panel also emphasized that there was no proof that he had no fault nor that the anti-doping violation was not intentional. “Therefore, the standard four-year period of ineligibility was imposed on the by the panel.”
It’s very obvious that Narsing was totally shattered now but still he commented on the unfortunate event that he was devastated at the CAS decision. His sponsors JSW Sports issued a statement of his “To say I am devastated at the decision of CAS would be putting it mildly. I have gone through so much over the last two months off the mat but the thought of fighting for the glory of the nation at the Games had kept me going. My dream of competing and winning the country a medal at the Rio Olympics has been cruelly snatched away from me twelve hours before my first bout.” He further said that he will do anything to prove his innocence and that’s only he has to fight for.
WADA filed an application before CAS challenged the decision of NADA to clear Narsingh following his two positive doping tests. But CAS upheld an appeal by the WADA against the NADA decision.
After the verdict IOA secretary general Rajiv Mehta told PTI, “It’s not just a loss for Narsingh at the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sports) but he was beaten by his compatriots, who did not want to let him compete at the Olympics, and not by his opponents.” He added that neither he nor anyone can say who has done the foul play. “If you go back, you can easily connect the dots and would clearly know who could be the suspect.”
Mehta stated that for this time the culprit was successful to stop Yadav from the OIympics. “ Though we may challenge the order and minimize the ban. It’s a loss for the country.” He pointed out the conspiracy theory, “We must go deep into the matter and the government should initiate a CBI inquiry into the matter. It’s not a small thing, it’s plaguing our country’s sport and we must nip this in the bud.”
According to the CAS website, it is possible to appeal against the CAS decision. Judicial recourse to the Swiss Federal Tribunal is allowed on a very limited number of matters like a violation of elementary procedural rules (eg. violation of the right to a fair hearing), lack of jurisdiction or incompatibility with public policy.
WFI President Brij Bhusan ordered a CBI investigation on the whole matter. Indian Chef de Mission Rakesh Gupta told IANS that the incident was very unfortunate “We were hopeful until the last proceeding of the CAS that he will get through which unfortunately did not happen.
Some questions raised after the ban
Why did NADA give him the clean chit without concrete proof that established the theory that his food samples have been tampered?
Despite knowing about the strict regulations of WADA why did the Indian Olympic Association take the risk to take Yadav in Rio and exposing him to an arbitration which lead to humiliation not for him but also for India?
The WFI president, Brij Bhusan is a BJP MP in Lok Sabha. So was there any pressure from the government to clear Narsingh’s name?
It is a shame for the country. If NADA tried to find out the concrete evidence before applied to WADA then Yadav and India did not have to face this humiliation on the day of his match.
