Yesterday a New York coffee shop witnessed another example of hate crimes on Muslims. A homeless man threw coffee over a 21-year-old Muslim woman before calling her a “terrorist” in a Manhattan branch of Dunkin’ Donuts.

Police reported the suspect Nathan Gray, 34, told the woman he hated Muslims and was going to kill her. An employee said Gray walked into a Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Sunday and he asked for a cup of coffee before sitting next to a group of Muslim women.

The incident occurred at 2:45 pm on West 35th Street near Seventh Avenue. Following the incident, police were called and they arrested Gray at the coffee shop.

A store employee said, “I gave him coffee and he said something to me about terrorists, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. He walked away from me and sat next to a group of Muslim women.”

He said the man started talking to the group and called them terrorists. The staff member and the women tried to ignore him but he continued his abusive words against them. The employee added that one woman called him ‘stupid’, so he threw hot coffee in her face. “It was hot, hot coffee. She could have been burned! Then he swung his bag at her and it hit her in the face,” the employee was quoted as saying by the ‘New York Daily News’.

Police said after the incident the woman ran outside and Gray followed her and put her in a headlock. The man has been charged with assault as a hate crime. The woman has refused any medical treatment.

Since Donald Trump elected as US President, the hate crimes have been increased across the US. New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce said since the election of Trump, hate crimes are up by 35%.

Earlier in December, a female New York police officer was abused verbally. She called a ‘terrorist’ and told “You shouldn’t be working for this city” while wearing a head scarf.
