Sunbeds Increases Risk Of Dangerous Skin Cancer Melanoma

A new study revealed that sunbeds, used in indoor tanning sessions, may put people at increased risk of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

It makes your skin expose to large amounts of UV rays that age your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. The risks are even higher for young people as evidence suggests that sunburn in childhood greatly increases the risk of skin cancer later in life. But sunbed use is popular in western countries, especially among young women.

Melanoma had increased at high rate since past years. Especially, 2014 had the highest rate in Melanoma as described in kreftregisteret.no. In Norway alone, 2000 persons suffer with this skin cancer each year. The World Health Organization (WHO) based International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified UV-emitting tanning devices as “carcinogenic to humans” in 2009.

The research by University of Oslo study included 141,000 Norwegian women for 14 days and found that women with 30 or more tanning sessions in indoorshad have 32% risk of melanoma than those who were not tanners. In addition, women who started indoor tanning before age 30 were on average two years younger at melanoma diagnosis than never-users.

The link of disease remained important after controlling age factors, skin color, hair color, birth cohort as well as ambient UV, sun tanning vacations and sunburns.

Modern sunbeds emit six times more UVA and twice as much UVB as the Oslo summer sun. These studies affected public health implications. The study showed that the use if sunbed increases melanoma in the society, as melanoma patients get increased and age is decreased.
