US mosques are under threat and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has asked to increase police protection after the local mosques received threatening letters and emails against the Muslim community.
Three mosques in California and one in Georgia received an anonymous handwritten letter which warned Muslims that President-elect Donald Trump will do to Muslims which Adolf Hitler did to the Jews.
The letter was mailed to Islamic centers in San Jose in Northern California and Long Beach and Pomona in Southern California. The handwritten letter called Trump the “new sheriff [sic] in town” who will “cleanse America and make it shine again” by wiping out the Muslims from the US.
It called the Muslims as “children of Satan” and they “would be wise to pack your bags and get out of Dodge.”
The letter said, “You are evil. You worship the devil. But, your day of reckoning has arrived.”
According to CAIR, a civil liberties and advocacy organization for Muslims in the United States, the Evergreen Islamic Center in San Francisco first received the letter. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that on Thursday night the imam of the center found it in the mail.
Hussam Ayloush, leader of the council’s Los Angeles branch said that this hate campaign targeting the California houses of worship and it should be investigated “as an act of religious intimidation”. He added that the state’s leaders must speak out against this anti-Muslim intolerance.
The letter was signed as “Americans for a better way” and ended with “long live President Trump and God bless the USA”.
Chairman of the board of the Islamic center in San Jose, Faisal Yazadi said he has hope that the sender of the letter would try to negotiate with the Muslim community.
He told the San Francisco Chronicle, “Our doors are never locked. I hope that person knows that we’re more than happy to have a dialogue. Hopefully, we learn a thing or two from him or her, and he or she learns something from us.”
According to recent FBI data, law enforcement agencies across the country reported that 257 anti-Muslim incidents last year, growing 67% from 2014.
CAIR national office reported that since the presidential election, more than 100 anti-Muslim incidents have occurred. A hate-watch group the Southern Poverty Law Center has tallied more than 700 incidents of harassment from 9th November to 16th November.
The American-Islamic council also said that the FBI asked questions in at least eight states to inquire about a possible threat from al-Qaeda to accomplish pre-election attacks.
