US President Donald Trump has fired the US acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she instructed justice department lawyers not to defend Trump’s executive order which banning the entry for people from seven Muslim countries.
A White House statement which issued on Monday said, “She has betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.”
The former president Barack Obama had appointed Sally Yates. Ms. Yates was responsible for controlling the justice department’s immigration litigation office. The statement said, “Ms. Yates is an Obama Administration appointee who is weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration.”
It added, “It is time to get serious about protecting our country. Calling for tougher vetting for individuals travelling from seven dangerous places is not extreme. It is reasonable and necessary to protect our country.”
In her place, the President named Dana Boente, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia until the president’s official appointee Senator Jeff Session is confirmed by the Senate.
Trump also fired ICE director Daniel Ragsdale
After sacking Sally Yates, the president also fired acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director Daniel Ragsdale. According to the Washington Post, so far, no reason has been given for the removal.
The Homeland Security Secretary Gen (rtd) John Kelly said Trump has appointed Thomas D Homan as the new ICE director. Homan has 30 years of immigration enforcement experience. He had worked since 2013 as the executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal operations.
Kelly in his statement said, “I am confident that he will continue to serve as a strong, effective leader for the men and women of ICE. I look forward to working alongside him to ensure that we enforce our immigration laws in the interior of the U.S. consistent with the national interest.”
But his statement did not mention Mr. Ragsdale who was the second federal official and who was affected by the Trump administration
