Woman Face Burned After Her Headphones Explode On Flight To Australia

A woman suffered burns to her face and hands after her headphones caught fire during a flight to Australia, officials said today as they warned about the dangers of battery-operated devices on planes.

The passenger was on the flight from Beijing to Melbourne on February 19. She was listening to music with her battery-operated headphones when the explosion took place, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said.

The woman was sleeping when she heard the explosion about two hours into the flight. She felt her face burning and threw the headphones to the floor.

She said in ATSB statement which released today, “I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck. I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor. They were sparking and had small amounts of fire. As I went to stamp my foot on them the flight attendants were already there with a bucket of water to pour on them.”

The flight attendants poured a bucket of water on the headphones but the battery and its cover were melted and stuck to the floor. The woman said people were coughing and choking the entire journey.

Stuart Godley from the ATSB said this was the first time a set of headphones caught fire had been reported.

The transport safety bureau said that lithium-ion batteries in the device likely caught fire. It stated, “As the range of products using batteries grows, the potential for in-flight issues increases.”

Last year, many airlines banned all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones because of fire risk concerns. There have been many cases involving lithium batteries.

The bureau said batteries should be kept in stowage unless in use and should be carry-on baggage not checked baggage.
