10 Old And Gold Bengali Movies Which Inspired Bollywood To Remake- Part I

Now a days, we can name many Bengali movies which remade from Hindi movies. But Tollywood doesn’t only depend on Bollywood. Hindi movies are also adapted from Bengali films. In this part Noise Break presents 10 old and gold Bengali movies which inspired Bollywood to remake.

Nishi Padma (1970) – Amar Prem (1972)

Nishi Padma is 1970 film directed by Aravinda Mukherjee and starring Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chatterjee.

The Hindi remake is Amar Prem(1972), directed by Shakti Samanta and starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore.

Parineeta (1942) – Parineeta(H) (1953)


This Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel adapted into a Bengal movie is directed by Pashupati Chatterjee in 1942. Again in 1969 Ajoy Kar directed this movie where Soumitra Chatterjee played the role of Shekhar and Moushumi Chatterjee played Lolita.

The Hindi remake was directed by Bimal Roy in 1953 and starring Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari. Again in 2005 Pradeep Sarkar directed it and Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan played the role of Lolita and Shekhar.

Bhrantibilas (1963) – Do Dooni Char (1968)

Manu Sen directed Bhrantibilas based on the 1869 Bhranti Bilas play by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar which was adapted from William Shakespeare’s ‘Comedy of Errors’ starring Uttam Kumar, Bhanu Bandyopadhyay , Sabitri Chatterjee and Sandhya Roy.

This comedy drama was remade, named Do Dooni Char in 1968 directed by Debu Sen, starring Kishore Kumar, Asit Sen, Sudha Rani, Tanuja, Rashid Khan and again it was remade in 1982 as Angoor.

Chhadmabeshi (1971) – Chupke Chupke (1975)


This comedy genre released in 1971 by Agradoot and the protagonists were Uttam Kumar and Madhabi Mukherjee.

The remake of this film was Chupke Chupke directed by Hrisikesh Mukherjeeand starring Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan.

Golpa Holeo Sotti (1966) – Bawarchi (1972)


This Rabi Ghosh starred 1966 Bengali comedy released in 1966 and directed by Tapan Sinha.

 Hrisikesh Mukherjee directed its Hindi remake in 1972 as Bawarchi, starred Rajesh Khanna.

Saheb Bibi Gulam (1956) – Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)

This film was released in 1956 by Kartik Chatterjee and starred Uttam Kumar, Sumitra Debi.

In 1962 Abrar Alvi remade this movie as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.

Basu Paribar (1952) – Hum Hindustani (1960)

This film was released in 1952, directed by Nirmal Dey.

The Hindi adaptation was Hum Hindustani released in 1960and was directed by Ram Mukherjee.

Mej Didi (1950) – Majhli Didi (1967)

Mej Didi based on story, Mejdidi (Middle Sister) by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is a 1950 Bengali film directed by Sabyasachi.

Majhli Didi is a 1967 Hindi film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Majhli Didi stars Dharmendra and Meena Kumari.

Kabuliwala (1957) – Kabuliwala(H) (1961)


Rabindranath Tagore written Kabuliwala was directed by Tapan Sinha in 1957.

The Hindi adaptation of the same name released in 1961 by Hemen Gupta.

Saat Pake Bandha (1963) – Kora Kagaz (1974)

This 1963 film was directed by Ajoy Kar.

The remake of this film as named Kora Kagaz directed by Anil Ganguly and starring Vijay Anand, Jaya Bachchan.
