Man Jumps Off To Death After His Wife Gets Detected With Cancer

A 52-year-old man committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of a three-storied Regent Park residential complex in South Kolkata on Monday morning.

He lived there with his wife at N.N. Dutta Road area under Regent Park Police Station. Cops suspected, Sanjay Mandal, a security guard, acted out of desperation as he was finding it difficult to arrange funds for his wife’s lung cancer treatment.

A police officer said that the victim went to the terrace of the three-storied building when others in his family were busy with their household work and suddenly jumped off from the terrace around 5.30 am. His neighbors heard a thud and rushed out of their flats. They found the person lying in a pool of blood. After being rescued, he was rushed to M.R. Bangur Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

His neighbors claimed that the man was suffering from depression since last few days after his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer a few years back. He stopped talking much to his neighbors and used to keep himself indoors most of the time.

“His father, who died earlier this year, used to fund the treatment from his pension. The man never had a stable job. So after his father died, the burden of funding the treatment came upon him,” said an officer.

The officer added that the man’s wife told them that he used to say that he wanted to die before her as he could not see her dying without treatment.

However, police have started an investigation into the matter, a senior police official said. Though police suspect after a preliminary investigation that he had committed suicide, they are not ruling out the possibility of any foul play in this incident.

“Although we have not found any suicide note, it looks like a case of suicide. We have sent the body for postmortem for a confirmation,” said the officer.

The cops came to know that the door of the terrace used to remain locked most of the time. The police have spoken to other residents of the residential complex to know that who keeps the keys of the terrace’s door. The police are also trying to know that how the person had managed to unlock the door and how could he even get the key. Police also spoke to the victim’s relatives to know whether he had any rivalry with anyone or had he been threatened by anyone in the recent past.
