Despite of being a big fan of Hrithik, the trailer didn’t impress me that well. As a maker of ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jodha-Akbar’ I expect better trailer from Ashutosh Gowariker actually. I think Director Ashutosh Gowariker has confused the picture space-time. And now I’m confused with the fact that whether I should go to see the film or not. But then the Hrithik’s fan in my heart is saying that I will definitely visit the theatres to see where the story flows.
Hrithik Roshan’s latest film ‘Mohenjo Daro’ is all set to release worldwide on 12th August’16. The film is written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita A. Gowariker. The soundtrack album and film score are composed by A. R. Rahman with song lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar.
The film Mohenjo daro is a perfect blend of adventure and romance. The film is set in 2016 BC in the ancient city of Mohenjo-daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilization. The evil greed of a man is about to destroy one of the oldest cities in the world, Mohenjo-Daro. A young indigo farmer, Sarman enters the city, fall in love with the priest’s daughter, Chaani, who is a dancer, and predicted of a new society. Sarman, in attempt to win Chaani’s love, finds out the secrets that no one even supposed to know-about Chaani, Mohenjo-Daro and about his own past.
Centered on romance through the cultures and ancient civilizations of Mohenjo-daro, Gowariker took over three years to develop the film with the help of archaeologists who documented the discovery of Indus Valley civilization. The film was shot in Bhuj and Mumbai with short schedules in Jabalpur and Thane. This film has been selected as the closing film of the 69th edition of the Locarno International Film Festival.
Talking about the film, Gorwariker said to Bollyspice, “It is a civilization that has fascinated me for many many years. What fascinated me was – what is this civilization? Who are these people? What was their society? What kind of politics did they have? What kind of religion did they have? What did they believe in? What are the manners and morals of society? If I focus only on these aspects and not have a story then it could easily have become a documentary. So a story was a must. That is what I have weaved in based on all the excavation facts that have been found.”
The film is the second collaboration of Hrithik-Ashutosh after ‘JOdha-akbar’ in 2008. Talking about his lead character he said,” Hrithik was my first choice, and I am very glad that it materialized. Hirthik has the ability to make any world believable. It is what I feel when I observe him as an actor.” Hrithik said in media interaction earlier, “I am very happy to act in this period film because Ashutosh Gowariker has made a very good film. It is a very difficult film to be a part of and we don’t see people making such films as they require a lot of research and hard-work in terms of pre-production. I think only Ashutosh Gowariker could have directed a film like this and only I could have agreed to be a part of a film like Mohenjo Daro.” At a press conference for the film, Hrithik said, “I looked at the script; you don’t want to know my second thought. But I still said, ‘no, he is my friend’, so I read the script. I loved the story but I waited till that script from 200 pages went down to 80 pages and then we shook hands and said ‘Let’s do this’.”
The film is an expensive venture. The budget is around 120 crore. The film is on a historiric time period and hence a huge amount had spent in constructing the sets. Since Hrithik had to undergo a lot of physical training and also had fighting sequence with tigers, he was rumored to have charged fifty crore for the film.
Mohenjo Daro is releasing on the same date with Akshay Kumar and Illeanna Decruz’s Rustom. Both of the films grab the attention of the audience for their big budget and attractive plots. ‘Rustam’ is based on the ill-famous 1959 Nanvati case in which a designated naval officer Kavas M Nanavati killed the lover of his wife and then was tried in court which soon became a media sensation. The two films have nothing in common which is actually good as the chances of comparing them on similar grounds greatly reduce. Ashutosh said “The thought does come to mind… that if two films come on the same day and clash, box office will be divided, all that (talk) happens. But ultimately, you have to do what is in your interest.. Sholay and Jai Santoshi Maa released on the same day, both were super hits. In fact, if you compare, Jai Santoshi Maa is a bigger hit than Sholay, because the cost to recover ratio is very high. Lagaan and Gadar (also clashed), one of them was my past film…So when I think of all that, I think Mohenjo Daro should work and so should Rustom, both films should be super duper hits.”
